A Victorian dream in Ram Niwas Garden

The Prince of Wales, later King Edward VII, laid the foundation stone in February 1876. Samuel Swinton Jacob designed the building in the Indo-Saracenic style, with Rajput domes and arches over the grand halls of a Victorian museum, and it opened to the public in 1887.

After dark

In the evening, floodlights turn the sandstone gold against the sky and the garden fills with families. Even if you don't go in, a walk round the outside is one of the nicest things to do in Jaipur at night.

Dinner next door

Masala Chowk, an open-air food court run by the Jaipur Development Authority, sits in the same garden. It brings stalls from across the city together in one place. Not every stall is vegetarian, so ask if it matters.

What to see

    The building

Domed pavilions, carved stone screens and deep arcades. Best in the last of the light.
  • Illustration: A painted gallery of display cases inside Albert Hall Museum

    Galleries of everyday art

Miniature paintings, pottery, brass and metalwork, arms and armour, and coins, laid out in painted halls.
  1. Tutu, the Egyptian mummy

A woman from Ptolemaic Egypt, between about 322 and 30 BCE, displayed in her own gallery.

  2. The Persian garden carpet

Woven in Kerman around 1600, its pattern is a formal garden divided by water channels. One of the museum's great treasures.
