A city built for trade
Sawai Jai Singh II laid out the walled city on a grid of wide bazaars, with whole streets given to single trades. Many still keep to the plan. Walk one street and you're among jewellers. Turn the corner and it's brass pots and wedding bangles.
How to shop here
Bargaining is expected at street stalls, less so in fixed-price shops. Smile, name a fair price and walk on if it doesn't feel right. Carry cash for the small stalls, and keep your bags close in the crowds.
When shops are open
Shops keep their own hours. Late morning to early evening is the safest window. Many shops in Tripolia close on Sunday, and some in other bazaars close on Sunday or Tuesday, so tell us what you're after and we'll check.
What to see

Maniharon ka Rasta
A lane of lac bangle makers off Tripolia, where bangles are shaped over small flames in the shop.
Bapu Bazaar and Nehru Bazaar
Block-printed cotton, embroidered mojari shoes, bags and souvenirs. A good place to start.
Johari Bazaar
Jewellers, gem dealers and silversmiths. LMB, the old sweet shop here, is known for its ghewar.
Tripolia Bazaar
Brass and steel kitchenware, textiles and lac jewellery.
Chandpole Bazaar
Marble carving and craft workshops at the western end of the old city.
Kishanpole Bazaar
Rajasthani fabrics and woodwork.
Sireh Deori Bazaar
Across from Hawa Mahal, for quilts, footwear and souvenirs.
