Two days in Jaipur
A 2-day Jaipur itinerary from people who live here: the walled city on day one, the hill forts on day two, and time to breathe in between.
Some pictures are illustrations. The real places may look a little different.
The short version
- Time needed
- 2 days
Before you start
Jaipur rewards an early start. The light is softer, the air is cooler and the queues are shorter before ten. The state's two-day composite ticket covers Amber Fort, Hawa Mahal, Jantar Mantar, Albert Hall and Nahargarh, so buy it at your first stop. City Palace and Jaigarh sell their own tickets.
Day one: the walled city
Be at Hawa Mahal early, when the morning sun is on its pink front. Walk on to Jantar Mantar, the 18th-century observatory of Sawai Jai Singh II, and then into City Palace, which sits right beside it.
Have lunch in the old city and give the afternoon to Johari, Bapu and Tripolia bazaars. End at Albert Hall as its floodlights come on, then come home for dinner on the rooftop.
Day two: the forts
Leave early for Amber Fort and get inside before the tour groups arrive. If you still have energy, drive up to Jaigarh for the great cannon. On the way back, stop at Man Sagar Lake for the classic view of Jal Mahal.
Rest through the hottest part of the day. Then drive up to Nahargarh in the late afternoon and stay for sunset, as the whole city lights up below you.
If you have a third day
Spend a morning with the block printers of Sanganer, visit the temples of Galta Ji, or end the day quietly at Birla Mandir, one of the closest sights to our home. In season, a sunrise balloon flight makes a fine last morning.
