The fort that guarded Amber

Jaigarh sits on the ridge above Amber, on Cheel ka Teela, the Hill of Eagles. Older walls stood here first, and Sawai Jai Singh II rebuilt it as his military stronghold in the 1720s. Amber was built for living. Jaigarh was built for defence, and it still feels that way.

Jaivana

The great cannon was cast here in 1720. It weighs about 50 tonnes, its barrel is some 20 feet long, and it was never used in battle. It sits under its own canopy on the ramparts, pointing out over the hills.

Getting there

The road climbs up from the Amber side. Amber and Jaigarh are linked by an old passage, part of which is open, but the road is the dependable way between them. Inside, only guides licensed by the fort's trust may work.
