Water, and somewhere cool to sit
Before piped water, stepwells like this gathered the monsoon rain and held it through the dry months. People came to draw water, to bathe and to sit in the shade of the walls. The steps zigzag down three sides in a pattern that seems to shift as you walk around it.
Look, don't climb
Visitors are no longer allowed down the steps. Walk the edge, look down into the well and listen to the guard. The view from the rim is the one in all the photographs anyway.
